The art of drawing on water – EBRU

Water painting is a technique known as Hebrew - Turkish art or suminagashi - Japanese art but also marbling paper - paper marbling. This is a method of printing on paper or textile material of some shapes and colors floating on the surface of the water.

The secret of drawing with paints on the surface of the water is a magic dust, known as thickening agent that in contact with water forms a film that allows the paint to stay above the water, so that the artist can create.

ü The technique of water painting has spread to Central Asia since the 15th century, in Turkey it has been used as art from the 19th century. The difference between suminagashi and Hebrew art are the colors and materials used, while in Japan the sumi paint is used, in Turkey colors are used based on oil or plaster and a special powder that forms a film above the water that allows the paint to float.

ü In Europe (England, France, Germany, Holland, Italy) it has spread since the  17th century.

ü The beneficial effects of this technique.

ü Water painting has many beneficial effects on the body and mind. Among those with the greatest impact are the following:

o   It visually stimulates the viewer and the trainer in the activity,

o   It trains psychomotor coordination,

o   It facilitates self-confidence through the obtainedresult,

o   It is a good relaxation exercise.

 Did you know that...?

ü The drawing made on water (Hebrew) is printed on paper or textile material only once and this fact gives it uniqueness, it cannot be redone.

ü Suminagashi means floating ink ("sumi" = ink, ink, "nagashi" = floating) while drunk (Hebrew) means cloud, cloudy.

ü Hebrew art or water painting is an educational activity that fascinates any child once he discovers it.

ü In Hebrew art the balance between water and color must be perfect. This painting technique involves making shapes using special colors, in water and printing the drawing made in water on a special piece of paper.

ü Specialists in this technique say that water painting is both art and therapy because when you paint, all fears and problems disappear, and emotions take shape on water and then on paper.

ü For painting with water some materials are needed. First of all, a tray deep enough in which the water will be placed. Then, special paint is needed for this type of painting and a stick or fine straw with which the color will be spread.

After preparing the materials, the work begins. In the water of the tray you drop color, and then with the tip of the stick, you can create all kinds of shapes  depending on your talent and imagination.

ü When the painting has been completed, the marble follows, that is, its printing on paper. The colors pass on the cardboard sheet, and the obtained print is allowed to dry in a clean place. After drying, the paintings can be framed and transformed into real paintings.

ü Through this type of art, children will also understand that talent cannot be reproduced or copied and that is because every drawing they make on water is unique. Water-based painting is printed on paper only once!

ü Water painting has many beneficial effects on children, both psychically and physically.

ü Water painting develops psychomotor coordination, stimulates the visual sense it finally relaxes the painter.
